"Flame Haired Newton"
The picture (click on the image) is a copy of the Cycling magazine from August 22nd, 1981. The text is a little difficult to read from this photo but it goes something like this.
It is a race report from the National Junior 25 mile Time Trial race of that year. Of some interest to present day Will's Wheels regulars is the third place rider. Described as "flame haired Newton" in the text, Greg bags the bronze medal with a time of 56-15.
The text also talks about Adrian Timmis whos time of 57-21 had looked good until Greg came home. A note of "sweet revenge" is mentioned in the article with reference to Greg having being beaten by Timmis in the Junior Pursuit finals by 6 seconds. Greg was also part of the winning Manchester Wheelers team.
It's hard to imagine a report of such in depth narative appearing in todays Cycling magazine. In 1981, time trialing was big business and hotly contested by the best riders in Britain. Adrian Timmis in particular went on to have a good proffesional career and finished the Tour de France in 1987. That was the year that Stephen Roche won. I wonder if the flame haired Newton could have beaten him in a time trial?
